Summer Holiday 2006
Lowther Pavilion, Lytham, 10th - 17th June 2006 PRODUCED & DIRECTED BY - Steve Chesters CHOREOGRAPHED BY - Rachel Kirkham MUSICAL DIRECTOR - Peter Weston Newspaper Review
Summer Holiday "We're all going on a Summer Holiday, fun and laughter for an (hour) or two..." That's what the almost capacity audience was treated to at the opening night of the St Annes Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's stage adaptation of the popular 1963 film. Granted, it was seen professionally on Blackpool's Opera House stage in 1995, but 11 years on, it is refreshing to see this local company tackle a new musical rather than dip their hand in the pot of old favourites. The cast performed with infectious enthusiasm and gusto, and had the appreciative audience hand clapping and foot tapping. Admittedly, everyone associates Sir Cliff with the leading character, but Gavin Kirkham had more the air of Darren Day and was well supported by his bus-mates, who all worked extremely well together – notably Peter Taylor as Cyril, who gave an accomplished and very likeable performance. Lucie Sumner as Barbara also gave a simple and natural performance, her pure voice highlighted in Constantly.
One highlights is a lovely harmonic rendition of Time Drags By.
The band was faultless, under the experienced hand of Peter
Weston, and brought back happy memories of the 60s with hits such
as Move it, Batchelor Boy and Living Doll. Summer Holiday runs
from 12-17 June at 7.30pm and tickets are available on 01253
658666.
