This was a curate's egg of a show, good in parts. A very long and
protracted opening got things off to a slow start. Then it began
to move along, helped by some good performances from the
principals, notably Chris Cooper, Stephen Hagan, Pat Dearden and
Jeanette Appleton in the title role. She captured the
tomboyishness just right.
The orchestra, under the direction of Gill Streatfield
supported the company well, but, as is usual with musicals, was
too loud at times and obscured dialogue by playing through it.
Scenery, costumes, lighting and choreography were good and the
dancers did seem to be enjoying themselves.
Finally, I do feel this company will have to move into the 90s
and use personal mic's as the sound did not help the show at all.
